If a merchant does not comply with the security requirements (covered in our 12-Step Security Assessment) or fails to rectify a security issue, Visa may impose steep fines.
Fines may be waived in the event of a data compromise if there is evidence of compliance with PCI Data Security Standards and Visa® and MasterCard® rules. To prevent fines, a merchant must maintain full compliance at all times, including at the time of breach as demonstrated during a forensic investigation.
